According to the former CAF 1st vice president, the Black Stars have done more to promote Ghana’s brand than the entire tourist ministry and sector combined, emphasizing the necessity for the government to focus more on football.
He went on to say that if the government spends a proportionate amount of the funds pumped into the tourism ministry, the country will profit greatly.
“What football is doing for this country will assist the country to reap additional benefits if the government invests a reciprocal amount of the tourism budget.” I don’t believe the government should provide money to football, but it may invest in infrastructure,” he remarked on GTV Sports Plus.
“The eyeballs that the Black Stars draw during the Africa Cup of Nations offer the country more publicity than what the state tourism organizations have undoubtedly done for the country.”
Mr Nyantakyi went on to say that many people in other regions of the world, such as Asia, became familiar with the Ghana brand after the Black Stars qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
“I recall meeting a lot of people who said they didn’t know Ghana until the Black Stars qualified for the FIFA World Cup when I travelled to Korea and Japan in 2006.” When they first heard Ghana, they mistook it for Guyana in the Caribbean,” Kwesi Nyantakyi explained.
From 2005 until 2018, Mr Nyantakyi served as President of the country’s football governing body, guiding the country to the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
