Ghana records two suspected cases of Marburg virus

Ghana has confirmed two suspected cases of Marburg virus, the health service said on Thursday (7 July).

It came after preliminary tests done in the country on two patients, who have since died, came back positive for the virus.

Marburg virus, is a highly infectious disease in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola.

A statement issued by the Ghana Health Service said: “No new cases have been reported since the two samples were taken two weeks ago.”

In addition 34 contacts of the two cases have been identified and are currently under quarantine and being monitored by the Ashanti regional health directorate of the Ghana Health Service. The directorate with support from the Ghana Health Service is currently conducting further investigations on the cases and contacts, the GHS statement said.

Below is the full statement:

If confirmed, these would be the first cases recorded in the country and the second in West Africa. Guinea confirmed one case last year.
