The opposition National Democratic Congress is deepening its effort to prevent the Government from creating additional regions in the country.
Former President Mahama is reported to have met the NDC MPs from the Dagomba area to do everything within their power to prevent the inclusion of Cheriponi into the proposed North East region.
At a meeting recently held at the former President’s plush airport residence which was attended by Hon. A. B Fuseini, Hon. Inusah Fuseini, Hon. Alhassan Suhuyini, Hon. Ras Mubarak among other MPs, a plot was hatched to incite the Dagomba Traditional Council against the Government’s move to include Cheriponi into the new region.
The former President is said to have asked his fellow kinsmen to resist the exclusion of Kpandai from the proposed Savannah region even though the King of Gonjaland has accepted the exclusion to pave way for the creation of the new regions.
In statement issued yesterday, the NDC MPs from the Dagomba area vowed to resist any attempt by Government to include Cheriponi into the proposed North East region. The statement said “We the Minority Members of Parliament from Dagbon have learnt with shock and dismay attempts by the government of Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo to forcibly yank off the Chereponi area from the Dagbon Traditional area where it has always belonged for hundreds of years.
This divisive and potentially destabilising act is anchored on the desire of the government to create a new region-North East Region- as part of efforts to create six (6) more regions in the Country”
The Dagomba MPs went on to say “Is this an attempt to fulfil at all or even any cost the promise by the NPP then in opposition to create the new regions even if it means dismembering some traditional or areas like Dagbon and create the basis for social strife or conflict?”
Linking the proposed regions to the death of the Ya-Naa of Dagbon, the NDC MPs recalled “with great pain and anguish, how over one and a half decades ago a government of NPP, under its watch unleashed on Dagbon a tragedy of monstrous proportions culminating in the gruesome murder of Yaa-Naa Yakubu Andani II and dozens of his Elders and advisors-an act Dagbon is still grappling to recover from. Let it not be said of this NPP government that it is about to open another sinister chapter in this obvious attempt or calculation to dismember Dagbon.”
JoyNewsRoom has learnt that the plot to fight off the proposed regions is to prevent the ruling NPP from controlling most parts of the North. It is the more reason why former President Mahama according to our sources at the meeting is supporting the actions of the MPs.
