The 2024 general elections in Ghana marked a significant turning point for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Despite our efforts, the party suffered a humiliating defeat, with attitude and negligence emerging as a key factor that undermined the party performances for both presidential and the parliamentary elections. Attitudes within leadership, government appointees, party structures, and grassroots interactions significantly influenced public perception and voter decisions. This article examines how attitudes shaped the NPP’s electoral outcome and proposes actionable solutions to rebuild trust and energize the confidence of the grassroots for future success.
How Attitudes Affected NPP’s Performance.
- Perceived Arrogance of Leadership
Many voters and grassroots supporters and the general electorate perceived some leaders and appointees of the NPP as detached and arrogant. This attitude created a disconnect between the leadership and the ordinary members, alienating voters who expected humility and engagement from their representatives. The party members expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived arrogance of some leaders in key government appointees, key stakeholders and created a sense of disconnection. - Internal Disunity and Factionalism
The party suffered from infighting and public displays of factionalism. This attitude of division weakened party structures, demoralized supporters, and projected instability, which did not inspire voter confidence. - Neglect of Grassroots Concerns
There was a widespread perception that the grassroots members were sidelined in decision-making and resource allocation. The attitude of neglect left many feeling unappreciated and demotivated, leading to apathy during the elections. This neglect weakened the party’s base, which is crucial for mobilization and voter turnout. The grassroots members of the party felt overlooked leading to a decline in morale and enthusiasm. - Defensiveness and Lack of Accountability
The NPP leadership often appeared defensive when confronted with public criticism, especially regarding governance issues and grassroots resource mobilizations. This attitude alienated voters who desired accountability and transparency. - Failure to Adapt to Changing Voter Expectations
The government and leadership seemed slow to adjust to shifting voter priorities, such as the increasing demand for policies addressing tax reforms, youth unemployment and economic hardships. This attitude of rigidity made the party appear out of touch with the realities facing many Ghanaians.
Key Solutions and the Way Forward.
- Foster Leadership Humility and Accessibility
Party leaders must adopt a humbler and approachable demeanor, actively engaging with grassroots members and the broader electorate to rebuild trust. Launch a public rebranding campaign focused on humility, inclusiveness, and a renewed commitment to the party’s core values, emphasizing accountability and grassroots empowerment. - Strengthen Internal Unity
The NPP should prioritize conflict resolution and bridge factional divides. A united front will boost morale among members and project stability to the public. Celebrate the efforts of grassroots members through recognition programs and equitable resource distribution, reinforcing their importance in the party’s success. - Empower Grassroots Structures
Include grassroots members in decision-making processes and ensure equitable distribution of resources. Recognizing their contributions will re-energize the party’s base. - Adopt a Proactive Accountability Framework
Demonstrate a commitment to accountability by addressing concerns transparently and embracing constructive criticism. Leaders must adopt a more approachable demeanor, regularly interacting with constituents and addressing their needs directly. - Realign Policies to Address Citizen Needs
Develop and communicate policies that directly address pressing voter concerns, especially in areas like unemployment, tax reforms and high cost of living, education, and healthcare. A responsive attitude will resonate with the electorate.
Conclusion
I must commend and congratulate our vice president Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his resilience and bravery as our leader. His intellectual acumen revives the spirit of NPP going forward. Fellow patriots, the 2024 elections is a wake-up call for the NPP. To regain our political position, the party must adopt attitudes that promote humility, unity, and responsiveness. By rebuilding trust with the grassroots and the broader electorate, the NPP can position itself as a party of the people once again. The journey to recovery starts with introspection, accountability, and meaningful reforms.
